About
The story behind the aquarium, the plant wall, and the quiet corner of De Pijp where Blue Sea calls home.
Blue Sea sits quietly on Van Woustraat, one street east of Albert Cuyp Market. Step inside and you are somewhere else — a living wall of tropical plants cascades over a glowing aquarium, floor-to-ceiling murals cover every wall, and soft light falls on leather armchairs and warm wood tables. No TV, no rush. A small lounge by design.
The shop reopened under new ownership in 2019. Dominic — who spent 27 years at the legendary Coffeeshop Bluebird in Sint Antoniesbreestraat — took it over with a simple idea: an old-school neighbourhood coffeeshop for the regulars, with the door open to visitors who appreciate the vibe. The plant wall and aquarium are his design, and the ocean-wave feel of the space came together soon after.
We put on a soundtrack with real, proper reggae at its heart — mixed with lounge, a little Mick Jagger, a little David Bowie. Never rap, never aggressive. Fresh coffee, tea, water and a little more. We welcome everyone who respects the space and the neighbourhood. Stop in, take a seat, stay a while.
